One of the most successful brands in automotive history is the GMC Denali. Just tell someone you have a Denali, and they will immediately know you have a luxury GMC. While its success seems obvious now, when the brand was created, there wasn’t anything to really compare it to. Now, though, the honeycomb grille is synonymous with a Denali and is seen as a sign of wealth and taste.
Luxury Meets Capability
SUVs were all the rage in the mid- to late ‘90s, and GMC was trying to figure out how to expand its reach to connect with customers who wanted more creature comforts as well as a larger and more capable vehicle. GMC basically created the first-ever Escalade for Cadillac, and from that, they decided to make their own luxury SUV, just with a different flair, the Yukon Denali.
There Wasn’t an SUV Like the Yukon Denali Yet
Every brand was trying something new with luxury and sport utility, some better than others. But what GMC captured pretty quickly was that customers wanted all of the utility of a pickup truck but with no compromises. They wanted the same towing abilities, a rich interior with leather and wood, supple suspension that could also be used in terrible conditions, and an exterior that looked special and different.
First-Ever GMC Denali
The first GMC Yukon Denali, released in 1999, featured a 5.7-liter V8 that produced 255 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. It also had an automatic 4WD system that detected wheel spin and a towing capacity of 6,500 lbs when properly equipped.
Welcome, the Sierra Denali
With the success of the original Denali, GMC increased the range of the brand to include the Sierra Denali for the 2002 model year. That Sierra Denali added a special feature that would make its way onto other GM trucks and SUVs called Quadrasteer, which used the rear wheels to turn independently for better maneuverability and added to its towing abilities.
A Bigger Engine for Better Luxury
When it came time for the second-generation 2001 Yukon Denali, GMC added the extra special trim level to the longer wheelbase Yukon XL and offered a new engine specific only to Denali models, the 6.0-liter V8 that produced 320 horsepower, which was later upped to 345 in 2003. All models featured Denali-exclusive 20-inch wheels.
An All-New Vehicle Calls for an All-New Engine
The all-new 2007 Denali models, which were still the Yukon, Yukon XL, and Sierra, received a 6.2-liter V8 with 380 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. They were $9,000 less than a base model Cadillac Escalade with similar luxury and amenities.
Meet the GMC Terrain Denali
It wasn’t until 2013 that the Denali trim would be bestowed upon the entry-level Terrain crossover, the first model with a V6 engine. Buyers loved that they, too, could have a high-end luxury SUV without spending upwards of $55,000 or more. Instead, the new Terrain Denali had a base price of just under $40,000. Just a couple of years later, GMC offered the Denali trim on the Acadia and then the Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD line of pickup trucks.
There Is No Brand Like Denali
Here in 2025, the Denali brand is stronger than ever. With a complete lineup of trucks, crossovers, and SUVs, the Denali and Denali Ultimate models offer the best bang for the buck in terms of luxury, technology, and quality while still costing less than an Escalade or Range Rover. No brand also has two major electric vehicles like the Hummer EV and Sierra EV, both of which have increased capabilities over gas-powered trucks.
