The 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 vs. the Competition

Ford has long been the biggest rival of both GM-branded trucks. While the F-150 has the distinction of being the best-selling vehicle in the U.S., the Sierra and Silverado combined often closely match or exceed the Ford’s sales. Nonetheless, sales of over 750K models per year enable the F-150 to offer a broad model line with Regular Cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew® cabs, and six internal combustion engine choices, including the hybrid drivetrain, but excluding the discontinued all-electric Lightning model. It also has eight trim levels, from the basic XL to the off-road master Raptor®, to the luxurious Platinum, which would compete against the Sierra Denali. Neither the Sierra EV nor the F-150 Lightning is part of this comparison.  

• The base engines of both trucks have a displacement of 2.7 liters and are turbocharged. They trade power advantages: the F-150 has more horsepower (325 vs. 310) and the Sierra has more lb-ft of torque (430 vs. 400).  
• The F-150’s best mileage comes from its hybrid drivetrain (4×4 only), with city/highway/combined figures of 22/24/23. The Sierra turbo-diesel beats that with 22/26/24 on its 4×4 model, and is available as a 4×2 with 23/29/26.  
• When comparing base engines, the GMC Sierra has a higher maximum payload (2,000 vs. 1,685 lb.).  
• Also, when comparing base engines, the GMC Sierra has a higher base towing capacity (9,200 vs. 7,600 lb.).  
• The most popular configuration for both models is the large 4-door cab with a small cargo box. However, the Sierra’s box is slightly smaller than the F-150’s (69.9 vs. 67.1 inches).  
• The versatile Multi-Pro Tailgate, featuring several useful configurations, is not available on the F-150.  
• Climate control vents for the rear passengers are standard across the Sierra model line, but require an upgrade on the F-150.  
• The convenience of keyless start is standard across the Sierra model line, but requires an upgrade on the F-150.  
• On the upper side of the model lines, the Sierra offers a 13.4-inch center touchscreen, compared to the 12-inch screen on the F-150.  
• The Sierra’s Google Built-in infotainment system includes an onboard Google Maps app that works without a phone connection. This is not available on the F-150.

Ram was originally under the Dodge brand, which has made pickup trucks for over a century. The Ram name first appeared in 1989, and when the truck division separated from Dodge in 2010, Ram became the brand name, with “1500” being the official designation for the half-ton pickup truck.

The base engine is a 3.6-liter V6. While the pair of “Hurricane” 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engines replaced the less powerful Hemi V8 last year, the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 returned this year for the V-8 faithful. Models are available with a Quad Cab featuring short rear doors and a Crew Cab with four standard-sized doors. Cargo beds are offered in lengths of 5’7” and 6’4”. There are eight trim levels, starting with the basic Tradesman and culminating with the Tungsten, the flagship of the model line. The planned-for-2026 Ramcharger Plug-in Hybrid has been delayed. 

• When comparing base engines, the Sierra has slightly more horsepower than the Ram 1500 (310 vs. 305) and significantly more lb-ft of torque (430 vs. 271).  
• When comparing base trucks, the Sierra has a higher Gross Combined Weight rating of 14,500 lb., compared to 11,900 lb. for the Ram 1500.  
• With no diesel or hybrid model yet, the best fuel economy of the Ram 1500 model line is 20/25/22, compared to 23/28/25 with the Sierra 4×2 with the turbo-diesel engine.  
• The Sierra’s maximum towing capacity is 13,300 pounds, compared to 11,610 pounds for the Ram 1500.  
• The Ram does not have the 15 available camera views or Transparent Trailer view towing features available on the Sierra.  
• At about the midpoint between the two model lines (Sierra SLT vs. Ram Big Horn), the Sierra has a standard 13.4-inch touchscreen, while the Ram still has an 8.4-inch screen, with a 12-inch screen available as an option.  
• The Ram does not have a hands-free drive system like the SuperCruise system available on the Sierra.  
• The Ram’s available Barn door tailgate isn’t nearly as versatile as the Sierra’s available Multi-Pro Tailgate.  
• When comparing the Sierra AT4X to the Ram 1500 RHO, the Sierra’s innovative, racing-derived Multimatic dampers offer far greater sophistication than the Bilstein dampers on the Ram, delivering both extreme off-road capability and a comfortable highway ride.  
• The Sierra AT4X has both front and rear locking differentials compared to just a rear locking differential on the RHO.

The Tundra is Toyota’s full-size pickup truck, named after a vast, flat, treeless Arctic region of Europe, Asia, and North America, where the subsoil is permanently frozen. Its engine choices are all based on its twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine in multiple states of tune, with the hybrid models being the most powerful. All engines are paired to a 10-speed transmission. The Tundra skips a two-door regular cab to offer a shortened 4-door cab in addition to its CrewMax full 4-door cab. It offers a choice of 5.5-, 6.5-, and 8.1-foot beds, the latter available only with the smaller cab.  

• When comparing base models, the Tundra has more horsepower (310 vs. 348) but less torque (430 lb-ft vs. 405) than the Sierra.  
• Also, when comparing base models, the Sierra has greater towing capacity than the Tundra (9,400 lb. vs. 8,300).  
• When fuel efficiency is paramount, even the Tundra hybrid model can’t match the Sierra’s turbodiesel fuel mileage: 23/28/25, compared to 20/24/22 for the Tundra Hybrid (4×2 models).  
• The Sierra can tow a maximum of 13,300 pounds vs. the 12,000-pound maximum towing capacity of the Tundra.  
• The Sierra has a standard seating capacity of six compared to five for the Tundra.  
• The Tundra has nothing approaching the versatility of the available Multi-Pro tailgate on the Sierra.  
• Rear passengers in the Sierra have more inches of room in nearly all dimensions, including:  
• Legroom: (43.4 vs. 41.6)  
• Shoulder room: (65.2 vs 62.4)  
• Hip room: (60.2 vs. 60.5)  
• Headroom: (40.1 vs. 38.5)  
• The Sierra’s short bed is slightly longer than the Tundra’s (69.9 inches vs. 65.6).  
• The Sierra offers SuperCruise hands-free highway driving technology for long drives, while the Tundra does not.  
• The Tundra mirrors its rugged exterior styling in its dashboard, while the Sierra offers a more elegant, refined dash design.
