The 2026 GMC Yukon XL vs. the Competition

Like the Yukon XL, the Expedition Max is built on the brand’s full-size truck chassis that is the basis for the F-150, and it shares most of the F-150’s mechanicals. The 2026 Expedition is the nameplate’s 5th design generation, which launched in the 2025 model year. It is available in Active, Tremor, King Ranch, and Premium trim levels. Instead of a V8, Ford powers the Expedition with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. There are no other engine options.

• The Expedition Max engine is more powerful than the Yukon XL base engine but is more in line with the Yukon XL’s 6.2-liter V8, trading 20 fewer horsepower for 20 more lb-ft of torque.
• The Yukon XL has a 2.6-inch longer wheelbase and is 4.6 inches longer overall, with the differences felt in the cabin.
• The Yukon XL has more cargo space in all configurations:
  • Behind the 3rd row: 41.5 vs. 37.4 cubic feet
  • Behind the 2nd row: 93.8 vs. 85.5 cubic feet
  • Behind the 1st row: 144.5 vs. 123.1 cubic feet
• In addition to space, the Yukon XL also has a greater payload capacity (2,070 vs. 1,956 lb.)
• The Yukon XL can be ordered for a seating capacity of nine vs. eight for the Expedition.
• 3rd-row legroom is about the same for both, with the Yukon XL having a slight edge (36.7 vs. 36.4 inches).
• Both models have a similar complement of safety technologies, including Blind Spot Warning, Rear Collision Mitigation, and Lane Departure Warning.
• Both models also have identical NHTSA safety ratings.
• Both models are available with hands-free highway driving systems, but the Yukon XL’s SuperCruise is engageable on more highways and offers better towing support than the Expedition’s BlueCruise system.

The Grand Wagoneer L is the most recent entry in this category. Named after the full-size 4-door Jeep SUV that had the same design from 1962 to 1993, the new model debuted in 2022. The Grand Wagoneer and extended “L” version give the impression that, like the Grand Cherokee, they are on a dedicated, possibly unibody platform, but in fact, it is a wagon body sitting on a Ram 1500 chassis.

Jeep has simplified its formerly confusing nomenclature. The Wagoneer and Wagoneer L models competed with the Yukon and Yukon XL, respectively. The Grand Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L were the same vehicles but optioned up considerably to compete against luxury brands. Jeep abandoned its luxury brand effort but kept the name. Now, all models carry the Grand Wagoneer name, with seven trim levels and a price range of $63,995 to $100,310 before options. The Wagoneer S is a completely different model, smaller than the Grand Wagoneer and with an all-electric drivetrain.

All Grand Wagoneer L models are powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-6 producing 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque. The previous 510-horsepower version of the engine is no longer available. The Grand Wagoneer L is available on base, Limited Altitude, Upland, 85th Anniversary Edition, Summit Obsidian, and Summit Reserve trim levels. The base model has rear-wheel drive and optional 4-wheel drive. All other trims have standard 4-wheel drive.

• The Grand Wagoneer L engine is more powerful than the Yukon XL base engine, but is basically equivalent to the Yukon XL’s optional 6.2-liter V8. (420 horsepower for both, with 460 vs. 468 lb-ft in torque
• The Grand Wagoneer L has no counterpart to the Yukon XL Duramax turbodiesel and its 495 lb-ft of torque.
• The Yukon XL uses a 10-speed automatic transmission compared to the 8-speed automatic on the Grand Wagoneer.
• The Grand Wagoneer L has surprisingly small front legroom at 40.9 inches compared to 44.5 on the Yukon XL.
• Third row head and legroom are within an inch of each other.
• The Grand Wagoneer L has a smidgen more cargo space behind the 3rd-row seat, but the Yukon XL significantly beats it in all other configurations:
  • Behind the 3rd row: 41.5 vs. 42.1 cubic feet
  • Behind the 2nd row: 93.8 vs. 85.3 cubic feet
  • Behind the 1st row: 144.5 vs. 130.91 cubic feet
• The Yukon XL also has a higher maximum payload capacity than the Grand Wagoneer L (1,759 vs. 1,550 lb.)
• The Yukon XL can be ordered for a seating capacity of nine vs. eight for the Grand Wagoneer L.
• The Yukon XL’s front brake rotors are significantly larger than those on the Grand Wagoneer L (16.1 vs. 14.9 inches).
• For a smoother and more stable highway ride, the Yukon XL’s wheelbase is 4.1 inches longer than that of the Grand Wagoneer L (134.1 vs. 130 inches).
• The Yukon XL’s standard center 17.7 inches touchscreen is significantly larger than the standard 10.25 and optional 12.3-inch screens on the Grand Wagoneer L
• The Yukon XL’s rain-sensitive wipers automatically adjust speed based on rainfall, allowing drivers to focus on driving. The Grand Wagoneer L’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed but cannot be turned on/off or adjusted based on rain.
• Useful for families, the Yukon XL’s keyless Access system can unlock doors from any outside door handle. The Jeep unlocks the front doors only, requiring a second step to unlock the rear doors.
• In Consumer Reports’ brand rankings based on Safety, test results, and surveyed reliability, Jeep ranked dead last, and with a worse owner satisfaction rating than GMC.
• Jeep has no counterpart to the Yukon XL’s available SuperCruise highway hands-free driving system.
